CDL Driver / Lead Guide

Our lead guides are the pilot ATV on the six-mile Takshanuk Mountain Trail. They lead guests up and down the trail, adhering to tour timelines. They also hold CDLs and provide bus transportation to and from our trailhead. They start each morning staging the mules for the tour, then drive the bus to collect their group and return with them to the trailhead. They provide safety briefings and outfit our guests with the proper gear. Next they head up the trail, making a stop for our guests to enjoy fresh baked cookies right out of the oven at our exclusive lodge, located at 1,100 feet in elevation with stunning views of the Lynn Canal. Then it’s back on the trail, heading to our alpine lake and finally the Chilkoot Lake overlook at an elevation of 1,500 feet. In addition to ensuring the safety of all guests, our lead guides provide factual information on Haines and the flora and fauna of Southeast Alaska. On the way back down the trail they’ll stop again at our lodge for our guests to enjoy a fresh homemade meal.

Requirements:

The position is primarily a guest service role, so a love of people and providing exceptional customer service is a must. Providing factual narration is also a large part of the job, so strong communication skills are a must. Must be comfortable speaking to large groups and have general knowledge of Southeast Alaska and its flora and fauna. Must be familiar with the town of Haines to provide narration on the tour bus and the trail.

Lead Guides must hold a valid class B CDL with airbrakes and passenger endorsements. Applicant must be able to pass a pre-employment drug test and random drug tests throughout the season. Lead guides must maintain a presentable appearance as they will be in front of guests at all times. Must be capable of driving ATVs and walking up and down the trail as needed in case guests need assistance. Must be able to lift 50 pounds.

Backup Guide

Our Backup Guides assist the Lead Guide in providing the best possible experience for our guests. They begin each morning staging the mules with the lead guide, or meet our lead guide at the dock where they will collect our tour group. Our backup guides provide narration on the bus transportation to and from the trailhead. They assist in ensuring our guests are prepared for the trip up the mountain and proceed to follow the group up the trail remaining in radio contact with the lead guide to monitor speed and the safe driving by our guests. They help at the lodge during meal times and operate a point of sales system in our retail gift shop while guests shop after their meal.
